Distance: 121 miles from St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge to Apalachicola
Weaving through national forestland and then along the Gulf Coast, this Florida byway is packed with photo ops and all sorts of wildlife. Comprised of a Forest Trail and a Coastal Trail, it is a unique journey that will take you through two very different ecosystems and plenty of classic Florida sights.
Drive slowly and watch out for wild hogs, bobcats, and snakes along these rural roads. Your first stop in St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge might even yield a spotting of the endangered West Indian manatee or leatherback turtle. Continue along the Forest Trail to Lake Talquin State Forest, where bald eagles and gopher tortoises live in the rolling uplands and swamps. As you head back south to the Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental Area, the most thriving longleaf-pine and wire-grass ecosystem in the United States, take a moment to look out your window as the Forest Trail cuts a stunning swath through Florida's woodland riches.
The drive along Apalachicola Bay's Coastal Trail begins a change in scenery from forests to salt marshes, beaches, and dunes. Before ending your journey in Apalachicola, cross the Bryant Patton Bridge for a day trip on St. George Island, a 28-mile barrier island that rewards with uncrowded white-sand beaches, pristine marshes, and some of the freshest oysters you'll ever eat.

Waarom is de stad Celebration in Florida zo bijzonder?
De stad Celebration in Florida is werkelijk een prachtige plek. Zodra je deze bijzondere stad binnenkomt, wordt de schoonheid meteen zichtbaar. De groene gebieden en wandelpaden, de schitterend ontworpen huizen en straten lijken haast onwerkelijk. Maar naast al deze uiterlijke pracht, weet je waarom Celebration echt zo speciaal is? Voor sommige bewoners zijn er verschillende redenen waarom Celebration voor hen uniek is, maar voor de meesten van ons begon het allemaal met een muis.
Ligging, ligging, ligging!
Celebration ligt vlakbij "The Most Magical Place on Earth" – slechts vijf minuten rijden van Disney World. Voor elke Disney-liefhebber of iedereen die van plezier houdt, is dit een droom die uitkomt. Disney World bestaat niet alleen uit attractieparken; er zijn ook geweldige eetgelegenheden, shows, livemuziek, entertainment en winkels. Alles wat je maar kunt bedenken voor een leuke tijd, of je nu met je gezin, partner of alleen op pad bent.
Een bijzondere geschiedenis
Celebration is een stad ontworpen door Disney en het is dan ook geen verrassing dat de oorspronkelijke naam “Disney’s Town of Celebration” was. Walt Disney liet zich inspireren door de charme van het traditionele Amerika en droomde ervan een gemeenschap te creëren die moderne gemakken combineert met een klassieke uitstraling.
De Disney Development Company (DDC) richtte de Celebration Company op om het project te ontwikkelen en investeerde naar schatting $2,5 miljard in de stad. Disney organiseerde een loterij om de eerste bewoners te selecteren: 1.200 mensen dienden een aanbetaling van $1.000 in. Op 18 juni 1996 verhuisde de eerste familie naar Celebration en op 12 november 1996 werd het centrum voltooid.
Prachtig ontwerp en plan
Celebration is een zogenoemde master planned community (MPC), een grote, op maat gebouwde woonwijk. De stad is ontworpen in een vroeg-20e-eeuwse architectuurstijl met huizen die veranda’s, witte hekken en verschillende dakvormen hebben. Burgergebouwen werden ontworpen door wereldberoemde architecten zoals Philip Johnson, Cesar Pelli en Robert A.M. Stern.

Net zoals bij Disney houden de mensen die van Celebration houden van de unieke magie die de stad uitstraalt. De waardering van de stad door bewoners en fans komt voort uit ieders persoonlijke connectie en herinneringen aan Disney. Dit is voelbaar wanneer je door Celebration loopt. De bewoners zijn altijd vrolijk, groeten elkaar en zorgen voor een warme sfeer.
Een speciale plek in het hart
Celebration heeft een bijzondere plek in mijn hart. Hoewel de stad niet langer eigendom is van Disney, ligt Celebration op land dat ooit deel uitmaakte van het Walt Disney World Resort en nu valt onder Kissimmee en Osceola County.
Celebration is een leuke plek om te wonen, met tal van evenementen en activiteiten. Bovendien zijn er steeds meer fantastische restaurants en winkels dankzij een recente uitbreidingsproject. Hoewel groei onvermijdelijk is, hopen Disney- en Celebration-fans dat de unieke magie van Celebration nooit verdwijnt. Dank aan Walt Disney, want zijn dromen zijn onze dromen geworden.

Celebration organiseert jaarlijks evenementen zoals het Oktoberfest, de "Snowing Nights" tijdens de feestdagen en een indrukwekkende kerstmarkt. Vacation Rental Villa House of Orange at Watersong Resort, trip to Tarpon Springs and Dunedin, Pinellas Trail

Stond al langer op onze bucket list, fietstocht langs de Pinellas Trial die loopt van Tarpon Springs tot helemaal aan St. Petersburg.
Jawel hoor, een winkeltje met Hollandse drop.
Eerst naar Tarpon Springs gereden om de zaak te verkennen. Op zoek naar een onderkomen via Google Maps een hotel in Dunedin gevonden. Best Western Plus Yacht Harbor Inn direct aan het water van de Golf van Mexico. Gewoon binnen gelopen en om de 'walk-in rate' gevraagd en gekregen. Altijd beter tegenwoordig dan via de boefjes van Booking.com, Expedia, Hotwire en hoe ze allemaal mogen heten. #bookdirect.
Dunedin, pittoresk plaatsje met boutiques, restaurants, bars en direct gelegen aan de Pinellas Trial.

Zicht op ons hotel in DunedinTarpon Springs
Even voorbij Tarpon Springs kwamen wij voorbij een parkje met strandje en heerlijk uitzicht op de zee. Daar hebben wij een half uurtje gerecreeerd.
  Eerste dag Dunedin
Daarna door naar ons hotel in Dunedin. Heerlijk genoten van het plaatsje en wat gegeten bij Chic-A-Boom-Room. Blijkt Dunedin ook een groot aantal micro brouwerijen te hebben. Ons hotel ligt direct aan het water, en wij hebben heerlijk van de zonsondergang genoten.
   Fietstocht van Dunedin naar Tarpon Springs met afsteker naar Honeymoon Island.
Zo, nu gaat het gebeuren. Het weer is ideaal. Graadje of 25, strak blauwe hemel en weinig wind. Fietsen geprepareerd en op naar de Pinellas Trail even verderop in Dunedin.

De Pinellas Trial Brug was helaas nog gesloten vanwege de schade na Irma
Heerlijk gefietst, eerst naar Tarpon springs. Oud vissersplaatsje waar veel Griekse emigranten zich gesetteld hebben i.v.m. de spons visserij.
Terug fietsen van Tarpon Springs naar Dunedin via Honeymoon Island
Er is een brugverbinding van het vasteland naar Honeymoon Island, en die wilde wij zeker ook gezien hebben.
Het fiets/voetpad over de brug is ietwat smal, maar filmen en fietsen ging wel.
Daarna weer terug naar Dunedin
Het waren een tweetal fantastische dagen, en wij gaan nu weer inpakken en terug naar ons vakantiehuis House of Orange, Watersong Resort, Davenport, Florida.
Deze koddige pelikaan kwam ook afscheid van ons nemen
En deze dolfijn ook.
Nu lekker relaxen in onze vakantie villa House of Orange met eigen privé zwembad en jacuzzi. Zo prachtig gelegen in Watersong Resort.

Have you ever considered renting an Orlando Villa instead of a hotel room? There are so many advantages to doing so.
Many years ago it was probably different but now vacation villas, condos and town houses offer so much more than many hotels and at a cheaper price. It is not uncommon to be able to rent a property on a resort that has a communal pool, clubhouse with bars and restaurants, fitness centers, fishing lakes and much more. With such enchanting names such as Watersong, Emerald Island and Thousand Oaks they all live up to it with beautifully landscaped gardens and conservation.
Most villas have private pools that can be heated on request again some of them overlook breath taking views of lakes or conservation giving you the opportunity to see some Florida wildlife close up.
Increasingly, there are now many homes that offer high speed internet access, free long distance and international phone calls, large screen TV’s, DVD players, spa’s/hot tubs and everything you need to make the villa your home from home, including, all linen, cooking equipment, towels etc. All included in the price. If you want mid stay cleans these can always be arranged.
If you consider the cost of say a group of 6 travelling to Orlando, work out the cost to stay in hotel rooms, then compare the cost of a vacation home. I am sure you will be surprised. Plus you have all that privacy, independence and freedom. If you want to cook in the villa then there are all the modern appliances at your disposal. If you need to do any washing, no need to drag all your washing to whichever floor the washing machines are located in a hotel, you have your own washer and dryer.
All vacation homes are within a short drive to Disney World and the other Orlando attractions.
